ABOUT HUIHAN LIU
Born in Guangzhou, China in 1952, Huihan completed his formal art training at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Art with BFA in 1975. He taught in the art school of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Art in 1979-1987. Huihan was a candidate and was accepted by the Graduate School of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Art in 1985. He then went to the USA to further his study in 1987 and graduated from the Academy of Art College in San Francisco with an MFA in 1993.
Huihan’s art was influenced by the 19th century academic French and Russian schools which were brought to the art schools in China in the 50s. He highly regards the group of Naturalists who worked in the academic tradition but portrayed scenes from ordinary life in the late 19th century. Inspired to travel to different regions of the world, he began painting as a cultural bridge to connect people. His goal was to share the joyful moments and compassion he experienced in these cultures.
Huihan’s paintings can be considered impressionistic realism; a combination of primary field study and reference, focused on compositional arrangement, color, design, accurate detail, spontaneous brushstrokes and texture. In his figure painting, he pays close attention to the characteristics of people. Gesture and atmosphere suggest a deeper meaning.
When he lived in China, Huihan participated in many national shows and exhibitions. Following his move to the United States, he has also been included in major national shows and invitational exhibitions. His paintings have won awards such as “Best of Show” in the Western Rendezvous of Art; “Gold Medal for Best Painting”, in the California Art Club’s 92nd Annual Juried Exhibition; Gold Medal for the Master Signature Division at the Oil Painters of America Western Regional Show and others. Huihan’s work has been featured in publications such as Art of The West, Southwest Art, The International Artists and The Artist’ Magazine.
This intensive 5 days workshop is designed for painters who have already had painting experience but would like to continue to improve their craftsmanship and visual concepts. The class will focus on how to stage a model with light and shadow including a quick study in order to finish the painting in a longer pose. A deep discussion will follow regarding visual elements such as design, placement of composition and focus point. The instructor will share his thoughts and discuss the relationship between painting from life and studio painting with reference to the class demonstrations.
