Painting on Student Canvas

September – October 2015
Taos Ski Valley & Abiquiu, New Mexico

Our mission is to provide an exclusive opportunity for exchange between students and outstanding instructors, with national and international recognition, in an intimate environment which maximizes personal artistic growth.

Join us for a week of quality instruction, demonstrations, a private room and meals, nestled in the historical villages of Taos Ski Valley and Abiquiu, New Mexico.  Master painters will provide personal critiques for students while sharing their insights. Models will be available daily in designated areas and on location when painting off premise.

The Hotel St. Bernard (stbernardtaos.com) in Taos Ski Valley, is an elegant European Ski Lodge which will host the first 3 workshops. Drawn to the forest as a child, Nicolai Fechin grew up near the Tartar border in Russia. Soon after moving to the United States in 1923, he was inspired by his passion for the mountains and indigenous people and located his family in Taos. Fechin’s portraits and drawings of Native Americans are among his most recognized works. A select group may be seen in his original, hand carved home which has become the Taos Art Museum.

Upon arrival at the Hotel St. Bernard, you will experience the alpine ambiance. A freestanding fireplace, surrounded by numerous copper pots in the historic dining room provides a natural backdrop for painting. Like Fechin’s home, many wood beams are hand adzed. Host Jean Mayer, along with his professional chefs and staff will serve 3 savory meals daily. The hotel will be open exclusively to participants in the workshop program, providing complete privacy and evening painting opportunities.

Located in Abiquiu, New Mexico, also known as Georgia O’Keefe country, between Santa Fe and Taos, the Abiquiu Inn (www.abiquiuinn.com) will host the last workshop. Inspired by the dramatic striped rock walls and open blue skies, Georgia O’Keefe made Abiquiu her home in the 1940’s. Soon thereafter, she was featured in retrospective shows in the Chicago Institute of Art and the Modern Museum of Art in Manhattan. Originally, she was drawn to Taos by Mable Dodge Luhan who provided her with a private studio.

The Abiquiu Inn is nestled among the cotton wood trees, near the Chama River. Native American inspired rooms open up to peaceful courtyards, overlooking the mountains. Locally inspired cuisine is featured in the Café along with ale brewed by neighboring monks. The Abiquiu Inn is a place of serenity and creativity.

A special Salon des Arts at the Hotel St. Bernard will take place during select workshops. The Salon is an intimate evening of dinner and demonstration by the resident instructor. The public is invited to attend this ticketed event.

“The Fechin Art Workshop for me was in many ways a life changing experience. Being surrounded by such intelligent, giving instructors inspired me to be a better painter and person.  I also learned from the group with whom I painted who did not hesitate to share their love for painting and their “tried and true” tricks of the trade… “
— Lisa Baurmeister, California
